The New Mayor Pledges a 'New Era' for New York City in Inaugural Speech
On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.
An Unprecedented Figure
The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.
Defying advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”
Steering by Socialist Convictions
Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for concern of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.
The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.
A Costly Policy Agenda
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:
- Universal childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
- A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.
Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.
The Core Challenges of Governing
In the end, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.
As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
