Several Affected as In-Flight Disturbance Hits A Delta Airlines Flight Landing at Sydney, Australia
Several people sustained injuries when a Delta aircraft traveling from LA to Sydney encountered significant turbulence this past Friday.
Flight DL41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it landed at Sydney Airport, a representative for the carrier told. A number of the onboard staff were injured.
Local paramedics said they assessed five patients, and transported three to a medical facility with relatively minor issues that included back pain and head pain. Those affected were between their 30s up to the 70s.
The event represents the newest example of planes encountering severe turbulence, with aviation specialists indicating that shifting climate patterns is a major factor.
The aircraft was carrying 245 passengers and 15 crew members on the aircraft, the official said, adding that the plane touched down "safely" at Sydney Airport at 06:48 local time on the day in question.
Paramedics indicated they got a call just a mere three minutes ahead of the plane arrived, and response teams were ready and waiting at the airport.
The reasons turbulence is growing more frequent - and more severe.
During the past year, two dozen individuals were injured when another Delta jet, on a route from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, Netherlands, experienced "severe" rough air just a couple of hours into the long-haul flight, and was forced to make an emergency landing.

Data suggests that there are around thousands of instances of severe or worse turbulence annually, out of a total of more than 35 million aircraft departures that are conducted worldwide.
Severe turbulence is defined as when the up and down movements of a jet passing through rough air masses apply more than a significant G-force on your body - a strong enough force to lift you out of your seat if you weren't wearing a safety belt.
