The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils duties at each end of the field

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
