Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Officers state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Police then located multiple other vandalized cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say initial examinations suggest the liquid was probably human blood.
"There is still no clue as to its source; officials are presently not informed of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they added.
City officials said they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the residents for information.
An important representative commented the attack rendered him stunned and required to be addressed quickly.
"This act hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a assailant aiming at residents of migrant background in five years prior.
